2L Summer Recruit Guide

See tips and tricks from your Professional Development Committee

By TAYLOR ANTONCHUK and ZOE STEVENS

2L Summer Recruit is coming up fast, and here’s the ins and outs of what you need to know.

Resumes & Cover Letters

If you haven’t started working on these, you should start ASAP. These two documents illustrate who you are to your future employers, so you want to have them perfected. Please note that your cover letter should be roughly a page in length, and your resume should be max 2 pages (plus a page for references if the firm requests them).

When drafting both of these documents, try to focus in on the skills that you bring to the table, from past experiences or employment, that you think will be transferrable into the legal world. For example, for someone who works as a server in a restaurant, they could highlight their strong communication or their ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Lastly on this note, have multiple people look over your resume and cover letter. Whether it’s your parents, partner, friends, the CDO or a PDC Co-Chair, the more eyes, the better! Each person will bring a new perspective to your resume, and will help you work towards a finished product.

Networking & Networking Events

There are already a few networking events booked, and likely a few more to be scheduled. We would highly recommend attend these events, as it is an easy way to make connections at the firms and it gets your name out there before the hiring committee interviews you. Additionally, it gives you an opportunity to learn about the various firms and see where you fit in and where you would potentially like to work.

You can check out the attached PDC Recruit Tips document for more information about how to draft a resume and cover letter and tips for the recruit.
