Business Law Group
The Business Law Group (“BLG”) is the largest student group at Robson Hall, and the only group that is focused exclusively on corporate/commercial legal practices. Whether you’re set on working in a big law firm or just want to understand what a corporate/commercial practice can include, the Business Law Group has something to offer students.
Our executive team is made up of 11 students from all years. The following are the executive positions in our group:
President
Vice President
VP Secretary
VP Finance
Events Coordinator
1L Director
Communications and Outreach Director
Photography and Media Coordinator
1L Reps (A01, A02, and A03)
We are grateful for the support of the Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law (“Desautels Centre”), whose ongoing contributions make it possible for the BLG to host its events. The Desautels Centre is dedicated to supporting students with an interest in business law, and we are always happy to help students connect with the Centre to further explore these opportunities.
Who We Are
What We Do
We offer students opportunities to engage in unique networking events, attend exciting speaker presentations, and participate in interactive experiential learning activities. The BLG supplements your classroom learning by providing you with a hands-on perspective of the practice of corporate law. Throughout the year, the BLG invites corporate and commercial lawyers from Manitoba’s top law firms to share their expertise and insights, based on topics that students are most interested in. In the past, the BLG has facilitated introductory speaker events on topics such as Mergers & Acquisitions, How Business and IP Law Connect, Opening your own Law Firm, a True North Sports and Entertainment Panel, and much more.
We also host events off campus to provide students with more opportunities to interact with the legal community. Some of our most highly regarded events include Women in Business Law, a networking event focused on the perspective of women in the corporate legal landscape, and the annual Art Braid Business Law Case Competition, an opportunity for students to showcase their presentation skills and legal understanding in front of a panel of judges comprised of corporate lawyers.

Getting Involved
There are multiple ways to get involved with the BLG! Each year there are opportunities to join our executive team depending on what year you are in. In first year, students from each section are invited to apply to be the BLG representative of their section. In 2L and 3L, positions are available if vacancies are available after priority has been given to executive members from previous years. So, if you know you want to join the executive team, it is best to apply in your first year. The main role of the executive team is to carry out the planning of BLG events so that students get the best experience possible while in law school.
Don’t want to be an executive member or don’t get selected? No worries! There are plenty of ways to still be involved. Reach out to join our mailing list and we’ll make sure you’ll be the first to know about BLG related opportunities. You can also stay involved by attending events such as our speaker series and annual Art Braid Case Competition!
Our Logo
The BLG is excited to be growing with the help of the Desautels Centre. In 2025, we developed our own logo to create a more recognizable presence within Robson Hall. The logo is inclusive of both the Desautels Centre and University of Manitoba colours. We chose these colours as a way to honour the Desautels Centre’s support for our group and because we feel our values align with the meaning behind the University of Manitoba’s colours. For more information about this meaning, please visit the University of Manitoba’s website here: https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/brand.
One of the goals of the BLG is also prioritizing our commitment to reconciliation by including more Indigenous perspectives within the work we do. In consultation with Indigenous members of the Robson Hall community, we thought to include some elements in our logo to honor this commitment. The circular imaging and flowing design within the border is representative of the Indigenous worldview of circularity, how we’re all connected and dependent on one another, and how we hold each other as equals. This aligns with our approach to business law – emphasizing relationships, mutual respect, and shared responsibility between our student community and the legal system.
The BLG is always open for new members to join! If you’re interested in becoming involved, or simply want to learn more, please us send an email at Business.Law.Group@umanitoba.ca. You can also follow the Desautels Centre on LinkedIn to stay up to date with what the BLG is up to!
